larvae we call the young animals, which are still different from the adults. Many larvae live their lives in the plankton. Plankton is the community of plants and animals that float in water. Most of the larvae to sink to the seabed when they are large (though not always grow up).
My photographs of "Plank Tern" are made true to life as possible, so true colors as I understand it, and in reflected light (ie not as silhouettes).
polychaete larvae (Protophora-type) in the southern North Sea.
In The following little series you see larvae of crabs, such as beach crab and the like, which I could not be accurately determined. It's all about me to show the living colors and shapes, an aesthetic but not necessarily a scientific task.
about the technology, I'll report in another post: the art of photography plankton on board.
The first two images represent Zoea larvae, the stage, which floats freely and easily in water, while their then upcoming megalopa larvae float just clumsy and fall.
First, a zoea of front, the second (the same animal) from behind:
now follow two megalopa larvae, which look similar, they measure 3 mm
well and are still in pending stage :
Bigger is this animal, I think I've found it near the sea floor. First, the "head" from above, and then the whole animal, about 6 mm wide:
And here is a good 10 mm megalopa on a piece of algae:
